Chairman Narita Calls for Stronger Corporate Culture to Position Dentsu for Global Leadership — Chairman Narita Addresses Employees at the 101st Anniversary Ceremony Commemorating Dentsu's Foundation —
Dentsu Inc. (President: Tateo Mataki; Head Office: Tokyo; Capital: 58,967.1 million yen), held a ceremony commemorating the 101st anniversary of the Company's foundation at 9:50 a.m. on July 1, 2002, at its Tokyo Head Office and at its Kansai and Chubu branch offices.
The ceremony took place in the auditorium on the 13th floor of the Tsukiji Head Office Building, where Chairman & CEO Narita delivered a speech on general policy.
Following are highlights of the speech.
"On June 27, Dentsu held its first general shareholders' meeting since the launch of its initial public offering, and a new group of directors was officially appointed as a result. I was appointed Chairman, and in addition to my role as Chairman of the Board of Directors, I have undertaken responsibility for the Company's overseas strategies including the partnership with Publicis. Meanwhile, President Mataki has taken charge of overall managerial duties, especially in the domestic sphere.
"As I have noted repeatedly, the world is undergoing a restructuring of historic proportions. All spheres of our society, including the socio-economic structure, the value system and media styles, are in the process of transformation. The advertising field is no exception, as it is going through a major transformation, which I call the advertising communications revolution. Faced with massive change, Dentsu has accepted all challenges ahead of others and implemented its own structural changes. These efforts culminated in the centennial anniversary of Dentsu celebrated exactly a year ago, a successful initial public offering on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange on November 30, 2001 and the partnership with Publicis, which was announced this March. And looking ahead, the ceremony commemorating the completion of the new Head Office Building in the Shiodome section of Tokyo is scheduled for November 1.
"I wish to join hands with all of you in celebration, because I feel so proud of these major accomplishments. At the same time, I believe we must continue to take on new challenges without developing a sense of complacency, in an effort to ensure a prosperous future for Dentsu. Together with President Mataki, I hope to complete the structural reforms to make the Dentsu Group stronger and more capable of providing excellent service around the globe.
"One of the major challenges faced by Dentsu lies in overseas strategies. In the global marketplace, corporate reorganization and consolidation transcending national borders are underway across a wide range of industries. As a result, greater importance is attached to branding strategies with global perspectives, and the competition among advertising agencies has intensified.
"The formation of the alliance among three companies, namely, Publicis, one of Europe's largest agencies, Bcom3, a leading communications group in the U.S., and Dentsu, with its presence in Japan and Asia, will create a geographically balanced network of global scale.
"By taking full advantage of the network to be established in conjunction with Publicis, which boasts powerful agency brands and ranks second in the world in media buying, I hope to produce positive results as soon as possible.
"Furthermore, Dentsu will renew its commitment in Asia where a number of Japanese clients are present, so that we can better address our clients' needs by strengthening Dentsu's own network there.
"I believe that individuals, corporations and nation-states alike need to have their own aspirations. Dentsu's aspiration is to put into practice the ideal of delivering the very best total communications services around the globe while seeking out new communications business opportunities appropriate for the next society, which will be born out of the ongoing structural change, and utilizing such opportunities. And through these efforts, I believe Dentsu will strive to be a company that will contribute to every sphere of society and offer hopes and valuable livelihoods to individuals.
"On November 1, the long-awaited Shiodome Head Office Building will be completed. It will be an intelligence center, where all services created and produced by Dentsu will be rolled out. Together with Caretta Shiodome, which will house the Advertising Museum Tokyo and Dentsu-Shiki Theatre Umi, the area is sure to be a new bustling center of attraction in this capital city of Japan.
"I would like you to maximize this new arena to further strengthen the corporate culture with a goal of bringing Dentsu into worldwide prominence both in word and in deed, in light of possibly listing on the New York Stock Exchange in the future.
"Now is our chance to build solid foundations that will serve as the basis for the Dentsu Group to propel itself in the 21st century. And I will work with all of you together to ensure a brighter future."
