Carat unveils a new global positioning focused on engineering meaningful difference and measurable client advantage.

Carat, dentsu’s global media agency, has launched Difference Engineered, a new global positioning and brand identity that sets out its ambition to create greater differentiation and measurable advantage for clients.
The launch comes at a significant moment of momentum for Carat globally, following its recognition as 2026 Media Network of the Year at Cannes Lions, as well as continued client and new business growth.
In South Africa, the launch builds on Carat’s own strong momentum and reputation as one of the country’s leading media agencies. The agency was named Media Agency of the Year at the 2025 Financial Mail AdFocus Awards and recognised as Media Agency of the Decade by SCOPEN in 2026. These achievements reflect the strength of Carat’s client partnerships, strategic ambition, award-winning work and, above all, its people.
Difference Engineered responds to a growing challenge across the media industry. As automation, optimisation and fragmentation have increased, media risks becoming increasingly standardised. Brands can achieve greater efficiency and scale while, at the same time, becoming less distinctive.
Carat describes this as the “difference deficit”: the widening gap between the efficiency of media systems and their ability to create distinctive experiences that build memory, meaning and brand value.
Carat’s response is to make difference a deliberate part of media strategy. This means identifying where differentiation can create competitive advantage and then bringing together data, technology, creativity, marketplace intelligence and human judgement to engineer that difference into planning, activation and measurement.
For Carat South Africa, the new positioning is also a natural expression of how the agency already works.
Lerina Bierman, Managing Director of Carat South Africa, said:
“Difference Engineered is more than a new positioning for us. It puts into words the way we believe great media should work. In a world where technology and automation can make it increasingly easy for brands to look and behave the same, our role is to find the opportunities to do things differently and turn those into meaningful advantage for our clients.
In South Africa, our success has always been driven by people who are prepared to question the expected, challenge convention and look for a better way. The recognition we have received over the past year is testament to that mindset, but also gives us the confidence to keep pushing forward. Difference doesn’t happen by chance. It comes from bringing together our people, data, technology, creativity, strategy and media expertise with real intent, and engineering that difference into better outcomes for our clients and their businesses.”
The proposition builds on Carat’s heritage of challenging established norms in media. From its origins as the world’s first media agency to its current focus on attention, quality media and consumer experience, Carat has consistently sought to challenge conventional approaches to media effectiveness.
At the heart of Difference Engineered is an approach designed to keep media systems responsive to changing audiences, markets and cultural conditions. Carat’s planning framework moves through four stages, Diagnose, Design, Activate and Measure, creating a continuous system for identifying opportunity, acting on it and reinvesting against growth outcomes.
The agency is also placing greater emphasis on transparency and flexibility in the technology and data underpinning media decisions, with the ambition of giving clients greater visibility and control.
For Carat South Africa, this approach is particularly relevant in a market where consumers, culture, technology and media behaviours continue to evolve rapidly. It reinforces an ambition to be intentional in its thinking, bold in its ideas and rigorous about connecting media decisions to meaningful outcomes for clients.
Ultimately, Difference Engineered represents both an evolution of Carat’s global brand and a clear articulation of Carat South Africa’s ambition: to challenge sameness, find opportunity others may overlook and deliberately engineer meaningful difference for its clients, their brands and their businesses.
